Abstract: Recently, the nanoscale materials, the foundation of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, has created great excitement and expectations over the last few years since they provide a very high surface area and possess chemical and physical properties those are distinct from both the bulk phase and individual molecules. The research on nanoscale materials or nanomaterials expanded so fastly and now it is one the most popular research topic among the scientists and engineers due to their variety of structures, interesting properties, as well as high-technological applications in electronics, catalysis, chemical engineering, pharmaceutics, biology, magnetic recording, and so forth. Among versatile groups of semiconductor nanostructures, the metal oxide semiconductors nanostructures stand out as one of the most diverse and most probably richest class of materials due to their extensive structural, physical and chemical properties and functionalities. Here, I will present the synthesis, characterizations and applications of various metal oxide nanostructures such as zinc oxide (ZnO), magnesium oxide (MgO), copper oxide (CuO), iron oxide, etc. Various applications such as gas sensors, chemical and biosensor, electronic devices, photo catalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, etc based on metal oxide nanostructures will be presented in this talk.

Professor Ahmad Umar is a distinguished Professor of Chemistry and serving as the deputy director for the Promising Centre for Sensors and Electronic Devices (PCSED), Najran University, Najran, Saudi Arabia. He is specialized in “Semiconductor Nanotechnology” which include growth, characterizations, properties and applications of semiconductor nanostructures and their various high-technological applications such as semiconductor nanostructures based gas, chemical and biosensors, optoelectronic devices, electronic devices, field effect transistors (FETs), nanostructures-based energy harvesting devices, to name a few, solar cells, Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, semiconductor nanomaterials based environmental remediation, i.e. catalysis and photo catalysis and so on. He has authored 22 book chapters, over 325 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals, 22 Editorial articles, 19 review articles and more than 171 proceedings, abstracts and technical reports. He has 6 patents either issued or applied for on metal oxide nanostructures and their based sensors and electronics devices. He received over 7100 citations with h-index =44 and i10 index =153 (based on google scholar). 

Professor Umar serves as the founding Editor-in-Chief for five well respected internationally recognized scientific journals namely, Science of Advanced Materials (www.aspbs.com/sam), Journal of Nanoengineering and Nanomanufacturing (www.aspbs.com/jnan), Reviews in Advanced Sciences and Engineering (www.aspbs.com/rase), Energy and Environment Focus (www.aspbs.com/efocus), and Materials Focus (www.aspbs.com/mat), all published by American Scientific Publishers (ASP; ww.aspbs.com). He is also the Editor-in-Chiefs for two other well-renowned journals, namely, Sensor Letters (http://www.aspbs.com/sensorlett/), and Journal of Nanoelectronics and Optoelectronics (www.aspbs.com/jno), and serves as the Editor for Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (www.aspbs.com/jnn), Asian Editor for Advanced Science Focus (www.aspbs.com/asfo), editor for Advanced Science Engineering and Medicine (www.aspbs.com/asem), and Editor for Advanced Science Letters (www.aspbs.com/science), all published by ASP. He contributed in the world of science by editing world’s first handbook series on “Metal Oxide Nanostructures and Their Applications” (5-volume set, 3,500 printed pages, www.aspbs.com/mona) and handbook series on “Encyclopedia of Semiconductor Nanotechnology” (7-volume set), both published by American Scientific Publishers (ASP). He is also Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports, a journal published by Nature Publishing Group (NPG). His works has been recognized by many awards, to name a few, “Best Research Award” by Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers, South Korea (2004), “Best paper award” by International Union of Materials Research Societies(IUMRS), International Conference in Asia (2006), South Korea, “Best researcher award” in Chonbuk National University by Brain Korea 21, South Korea, “Highest number of Publication Award” for publishing maximum number of SCI papers in Chonbuk National University, “Highest Impact factor paper award” for publishing a research papers in high impact journals by Brain Korea 21 Project, South Korea, “Young scientist award” by European Materials Research Society, France, “Best Researcher Award” by Najran University, Najran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2009), “Best Scholar Award”, Najran University, Najran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2010), ‘Top 100 Scientists award in the arena of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology’, by IBC, Cambridge, England (2012), “Almarai Award” (SR, 100,000), for Innovative research, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2013) and so forth. In 2016, he was chosen as NRI of the year 2016 in whole Middle East.
